Type something like "create an image of a cat sitting on a mountain" in ChatGPT, and it'll generate the image right there in the chat. No extra tools, no separate apps. It just works.
ChatGPT uses DALL-E 3 and GPT-4o's native image generation to create images from text descriptions. Both free and Plus users can generate images, though Plus subscribers get much higher limits.
How to Generate an Image
- Open ChatGPT and log in
- Type a description of what you want - be as specific as possible
- Wait a few seconds while ChatGPT generates the image
- Click on the image to view it full-size
- Click the download button to save it
Tips for Better Prompts
A vague prompt gives you a vague image. Here's what makes a difference:
- Be specific about style: "a watercolor painting of..." or "a photorealistic image of..."
- Describe the mood: "warm golden hour lighting" or "dark and moody atmosphere"
- Mention composition: "close-up portrait" or "wide-angle landscape"
- Add details: colors, textures, backgrounds, and camera angles all help
Available Resolutions
ChatGPT generates images in three sizes:
- 1024x1024 - square, good for social media posts and profile pictures
- 1024x1792 - portrait/vertical, great for phone wallpapers and Pinterest
- 1792x1024 - landscape/horizontal, works well for headers and desktop wallpapers
Free vs Plus Limits
Free users can generate a limited number of images per day. Once you hit the cap, you'll need to wait until it resets. The exact number changes, but expect somewhere around a handful per day.
Plus subscribers get significantly more generations. You also get access to GPT-4o's native image generation, which tends to produce more photorealistic results and handles text in images much better than DALL-E 3 alone.

Editing Your Images
Don't like something about the result? Just tell ChatGPT what to change. You can say things like:
- "Make the background blue instead of green"
- "Add a hat to the person"
- "Make it look more like a painting"
- "Change it to nighttime"
I was genuinely impressed the first time I asked it to "move the tree to the right side" and it actually understood what I meant. Not perfect every time, but way better than starting over.
Trending Styles
The Ghibli style trend took the internet by storm, but there are plenty of other popular styles to try: Pixar-style 3D, anime, watercolor, oil painting, pixel art, and comic book are all worth experimenting with. Check out our prompt guide for more inspiration.
