How to Change Your WiFi Password - Step by Step for Any Router

Changing your WiFi password is a two-minute job. You log in to your router's admin panel, find the Wireless settings and type in your new password. All routers work the same way - only the interface looks different.

To start, you need your router's IP address (usually `192.168.1.1` or `192.168.0.1`), your admin username and password (on the sticker on the router) and your new WiFi password ready.

Step 1 - Log In to Your Router

  1. Open a browser on a device connected to your WiFi.
  2. Type your router's IP address into the address bar. Try `http://192.168.1.1` or `http://192.168.0.1`. Fritz!Box users: try `http://fritz.box`.
  3. Enter your admin username and password. Both are usually on the sticker on the bottom of your router.
Not sure which IP your router uses? See the guide: How to find your router's IP address.

Step 2 - Find Wireless Settings

Once logged in, look for one of these menu items:

  • Wireless (TP-Link, Netgear)
  • WiFi or WLAN (ASUS, Huawei)
  • Wireless Settings (D-Link, Linksys)
  • Home Network (Fritz!Box)
Click it. You see your current network name (SSID) and password.

Step 3 - Change the Password

  1. Find the Password, Key, Pre-Shared Key or WPA Password field.
  2. Clear the current password and type your new one.
  3. Click Save or Apply.
  4. The router applies the change. All connected devices disconnect.
After saving, reconnect all your devices with the new password. Start with your phone - if it connects successfully, the password change worked.

What Makes a Good WiFi Password?

A strong WiFi password is at least 12 characters long. Mix letters (upper and lower case), numbers and a symbol or two. Avoid:

  • Your name, address or date of birth
  • Common words like "password" or "internet"
  • The router's default password (change it from the default)
A passphrase works well: three or four random words with numbers, like `lamp-42-purple-desk`. Easy to type on a phone, hard to guess.

Router-Specific Notes

Fritz!Box - The WiFi password is called WLAN key (WLAN-Schlüssel). Find it under Home Network > Network > WLAN.

TP-Link - Go to Wireless > Wireless Security. The password field is labeled Wireless Password.

ASUS - Go to Wireless > General. The WPA Pre-Shared Key field holds the password.

Huawei - Go to WLAN > WLAN Basic Settings. The password field is labeled WPA PreSharedKey.
