How to Change Your WiFi Password (Any Router)

How to Change Your WiFi Password (Any Router)

Log in to your router's admin panel, find the Wireless settings and type in a new password. That's the whole process - it takes about two minutes regardless of which router you own.

Before you start, grab three things: your router's IP address (usually `192.168.1.1` or `192.168.0.1`), the admin username and password (printed on the sticker on your router) and the new WiFi password you want to use.

Quick answer: Open a browser, go to your router's IP address, log in with the admin credentials from the router sticker, navigate to Wireless settings, type your new password and click Save.

Step 1 - Log In to Your Router

  1. Open a browser on a device connected to your WiFi.
  2. Type your router's IP address into the address bar. Try `http://192.168.1.1` or `http://192.168.0.1`. Fritz!Box users can try `http://fritz.box`.
  3. Enter your admin username and password. You'll find both on the sticker on the bottom of your router.
Not sure which IP your router uses? Check the guide: How to find your router's IP address.

Step 2 - Find Wireless Settings

Once you're logged in, look for one of these menu items:

  • Wireless (TP-Link, Netgear)
  • WiFi or WLAN (ASUS, Huawei)
  • Wireless Settings (D-Link, Linksys)
  • Home Network (Fritz!Box)
Click it and you'll see your current network name (SSID) and password.

Step 3 - Change the Password

  1. Find the Password, Key, Pre-Shared Key or WPA Password field.
  2. Clear the current password and type your new one.
  3. Click Save or Apply.
  4. The router applies the change and all connected devices disconnect.
After saving, reconnect your devices with the new password. I'd recommend starting with your phone - if it connects successfully, you know the change worked.

What Makes a Good WiFi Password?

Strong WiFi passwords are at least 12 characters long. Mix upper and lower case letters, numbers and a symbol or two. Stay away from:

  • Your name, address or date of birth
  • Common words like "password" or "internet"
  • The router's default password (always change it)
A passphrase works really well here: three or four random words with numbers, like `lamp-42-purple-desk`. It's easy to type on a phone and hard to guess.

Router-Specific Notes

Fritz!Box - The WiFi password is called WLAN key (WLAN-Schlüssel). You'll find it under WLAN (directly in the left menu).

TP-Link - Go to Wireless > Wireless Security. The password field is labeled Wireless Password.

ASUS - Head to Wireless > General. The WPA Pre-Shared Key field holds the password.

Huawei - Go to WLAN > WLAN Basic Settings. Look for the field labeled WPA PreSharedKey.

Etisalat / STC - ISP routers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia follow the same steps. See Etisalat WiFi Password or STC Router Login for model-specific details.
